Books, coffee, and blanket on a deck overlooking Appalachian mountains
Welcome to my Appalachian book lair. If you love gothy settings, mountain lore, and folk magic, you have found your new favorite site.

Welcome to the Mountains

There are places in Appalachia where the mountains fold so tightly together, the sun disappears hours before it should.

There are houses at the ends of roads nobody travels anymore. Family stories get whispered across kitchen tables. Cemeteries here are swallowed up by the woods. There are superstitions we laugh about in daylight but remember with a chill when we’re walking to the car alone after dark.

This is where my stories begin.

Welcome. I’m Lenora Bellhurst, an Appalachian Gothic author and the woman behind The Appalachian G’Author.

I write about the darker side of the mountains: folklore and forgotten places, complicated women, dangerous men, old sins, strange happenings, family secrets, ghosts (both literal and otherwise), and the kind of love that might save you or ruin you. Probably a little of both.

But this space will be about more than my books.

I want to explore the Appalachia that has fascinated me for as long as I can remember: the beautiful, peculiar, sometimes unsettling places hidden beneath the stereotypes.

We’ll talk about mountain legends and ghost stories. Folklore and superstitions. Strange history. Unsolved mysteries. Old houses. Forgotten cemeteries. Appalachian writers and literature. Places worth wandering into simply because the road looks interesting.

And, of course, books.

I’ll also take you behind the scenes of my own writing: where stories come from, the real places and legends that inspire them, characters who refuse to behave, research rabbit holes, works in progress, and what it actually looks like to build fictional worlds out of the mountains I love.

That brings me to The Appalachian G’Author.

Yes, the apostrophe is intentional. I like to keep things classy.

The Appalachian G’Author is part gothic author, part Appalachian wanderer, and perhaps part ghost hunter who brought too many books. It’s my little corner of the mountains for people who believe old stories are worth preserving, strange places are worth exploring, and sometimes the best thing you can do is coddiwomple, or set off purposefully toward a destination you haven’t entirely figured out yet.

That feels like a fitting way to begin this adventure.

So light a candle. Pour something warm. Ignore whatever just made that noise outside, and sit a spell. We have stories to share.

Welcome to the mountains.
