๐ฆ THE TRI-CITIES SPOOKY SEASON GUIDE: 2026 ๐
Or: A comprehensive list of places to go if sitting quietly at home like a normal person simply isnโt an option.
Spooky Season is now upon us, my dark little Appalachian souls.
And fortunately for those of us who consider October a lifestyle rather than a month, Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia are absolutely crawling with ghost walks, haunted farms, creepy old houses, Halloween festivals, pumpkins, wolves, corn mazes and opportunities to make poor decisions after sundown.
So pull the black sweater out of storage, lace up the boots, apply enough eyeliner to concern your mother, and let us begin.

๐ KINGSPORT: APPARENTLY WE LIVE HERE NOW
๐ Park After Dark โ Bays Mountain Park
๐
October 24 | 5โ9 p.m.
This may be one of the coolest Halloween events in the region.
Bays Mountain stays open after dark for moonlight adventures, sunset barge rides, stargazing, trick-or-treating, pumpkin painting and a Halloween laser show.
But most importantly:
You can gather at the wolf habitat after dark, listen to wolf folklore and then HOWL WITH THE WOLVES.
I cannot emphasize this enough.
WE CAN GO INTO THE MOUNTAINS AT NIGHT AND HOWL WITH WOLVES!
This is basically Appalachian Goth Church.
๐๏ธ Passes range from $10โ$30 depending on activities.

๐ถ Laser Fright Light โ Bays Mountain Planetarium
Throughout late October, Bays Mountain is also running Laser Fright Light, a Halloween-themed planetarium laser show featuring spooky-season music.
Because apparently simply listening to โMonster Mashโ is insufficient.
We must now fire lasers across the heavens.
Excellent.

๐ Haunted Hot-Rods Car Show โ Kingsport Farmers Market
๐
October 10 | 3โ8 p.m.

๐ฌ Trick or Treat on the Street โ Downtown Kingsport
๐
Halloween โ October 31 | Noonโ2 p.m.
Downtown businesses will be handing out candy to costumed children.
Translation:
Bring the tiny goblins downtown and allow them to acquire enough sugar to briefly achieve immortality.

๐ป JOHNSON CITY: HISTORY, HAINTS & CORNFIELDS
๐ Stories from the Pumpkin Patch โ Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site
๐
October 10 | 3โ8 p.m.
Historic house.
Old Appalachian stories.
Halloween crafts.
Hayrides.
Hot apple cider served from a nineteenth-century cabin.
And โ because apparently we werenโt sufficiently interested yet โ an ancient spooky cave you can explore.
If Iโm honest, they had me at ancient spooky cave.
As if that didnโt make my black little soul happy enough, storytellers from the Jonesborough International Storytelling community will share folklore and fall tales throughout the event.
๐๏ธ Adults $8 | Children $5

๐ 440 Okolona Road, Johnson City
If casually walking through corn in complete darkness while unseen people actively attempt to terrify you sounds relaxing, congratulations.
You have just found your people and your new favorite spooky fix.
Roan Valleyโs fall programming includes a haunted corn maze and nighttime haunted attractions on select evenings. Personally, I consider ordinary cornfields mildly threatening after sunset, so adding monsters seems unnecessarily ambitious.
But carry on.
๐ป Appalachian GhostWalks
Appalachian GhostWalks
Web
Address: 1216 W State of Franklin Rd, Johnson City, TN 37604, United States
Phone: +1 423-743-9255
For those who prefer their ghosts with a side of actual history, Appalachian GhostWalks offers haunted-history experiences around Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, including Johnson Cityโs โLittle Chicagoโ stories involving Prohibition, bootlegging, crime, tunnels, and local ghost lore.
Which is exactly the sort of historical chaos I came here for.
๐ญ Treats in the Streets โ Downtown Johnson City
๐
October 29 | 4โ7 p.m.
Downtown Johnson City becomes one giant trick-or-treat route, with participating businesses handing out goodies throughout the district.
Then you can wander over to Founders Park for the final Acoustic Autumn concert from 6โ7:30.

๐งช BOO!SEUM โ Hands On! Discovery Center

Basically science, but made delightfully spooky.

๐บ๐ป Brews & Boos
๐
October 17 | 7โ9 p.m.
๐ Jimmy Neil Smith Park
๐๏ธ $20 advance / $25 day-of
Sit beneath the October sky in Tennesseeโs oldest town while professional storytellers tell ghost stories. Combined with promises of fall beer, cider, and food, this is dangerously close the my ideal evening.
So bring a chair or blanket, along with all your spooky spirit energy. The program is recommended for ages 10+.

Jonesborough Halloween Haunts & Happenings
๐ง Halloween Trivia โ McKinney Center
๐
October 23 | 7โ9 p.m.
Horror villains? Scary television? Local haints? Halloween lore?
At long last, it is time!
Now, all those years you spent retaining completely useless information about horror movies can become competitive knowledge. Doesnโt get any better.

๐ฏ๏ธ Haunting on the Mount โ Rocky Mount State Historic Site
๐
October 15โ17
Rocky Mount was the territorial capital of the Southwest Territory from 1790โ1792.
Naturally, the appropriate thing to do in October is wander through it at night while people tell you ghost stories in every room.
The nighttime tours combine historical interpretation with ghostly tales and paranormal stories connected to the Tri-Cities.
Recommended for ages 13+.
This one is VERY high on my list.

Bristol is basically throwing an all-day Halloween party.

And because State Street literally divides Tennessee and Virginia, Believe in Bristol points out that this may be the only Halloween parade in America taking place in two states simultaneously.
That is delightfully weird, and I love it.

AND IF YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO BE TERRIFIEDโฆ
There are several full-fledged haunted attractions scattered throughout the surrounding Tri-Cities area.
Backyard Terrors Haunted Attractions in Bluff City offers a homegrown haunted attraction/funhouse experience.
Stickley Farm in Bluff City runs fall activities and a more intense haunted attraction on Friday and Saturday nights during October.
And The Haunted Grounds in the Johnson City/Gray area offers seasonal Halloween scares for those among you who enjoy paying strangers to chase you through darkness.
I personally have anxiety for free, but I respect the entrepreneurial spirit.
๐๐ฆ SO THERE YOU HAVE IT, APPALACHIA.
For the next few weeks we have:
Ghost stories.
Haunted houses.
Creepy art.
Historic haints.
Cornfields full of slasher wannabes.
Pumpkins everywhere.
Ghost walks.
Halloween trains.
Laser shows.
Ancient caves.
And the opportunity to stand on a mountain beneath an October sky and HOWL WITH WOLVES.
The veil is thinning. The mountains are turning. The nights are getting longer.
And somewhere in East Tennessee, a Spirit Halloween has already possessed the corpse of a former retail store.
Spooky Season is officially upon us. By all means, letโs make the most of it. ๐ค๐๐
Save this post because Iโll be adding more Tri-Cities Halloween events as they are announced. Event dates, prices and availability can change, so check the linked official event pages before heading out.
